Who Am I?
I was born prematurely at 4.5 pounds on June 23, 1940 and was the twentieth of twenty-two children from my father’s two marriages. I suffered from scarlet fever and infantile paralysis, which caused me to lose strength in my left leg and foot. I wore a leg brace until I was eight years old. In high school, after years of medical treatments, I excelled in basketball—and track—to the degree that I became the youngest member of the 1956 U.S. Olympic team, and later won three gold medals in the 1960 Games. I overcame my challenges to succeed.
